the french revolution term of "egalitie" as in "libertie, egalitie, fraternitie", does not mean egalitarianism.

it means equality before the law.

the french revolution was against absolute monarchism, where the law was not equally applied - the lower your status, the more harsh the law was.

of course, we all know what happened after the revolution -shades of "animal farm" , and some people are more "equal" than others - but the principle of "egalitie" before the law is a good one. and an important factor in western democracy and free society.

Well, there's equality (before the law) and egalitarianism. I'm for the first and deadset against the latter.

Brusselsjournal.com also commented on the strong emphasis on secularism and (supposed) egalitarianism.

Everyone *should* be equal in the eyes of the state. But on the individual level there's a right to treat people unequal. If not, would you be forced to treat your boss the same you do your mother?

But I don't know that it's meant as strongly as that. The criticism holds merit, though. Freedom is the right to be different/unequal.
